A Missouri Father Was Fatally Shot After Offering a Ride to a Woman, Police Say
William Palmer, a father of three from St. Louis, Missouri, was allegedly shot and killed in the early hours of Sunday, February 1, 2026, after stopping to offer a female hitchhiker a ride, according to police and local news reporting.
The victim, identified as William Palmer, was found with a fatal gunshot wound in downtown St. Louis just before 2:30 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. Authorities say Palmer had been collecting scrap metal earlier that night when he encountered the woman on the roadside and stopped to help her reach a nearby warming shelter.
Police arrested 36-year-old Brittany Rivoire in connection with the killing. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Rivoire firing a shot that struck Palmer in the head before she took his truck and drove it a short distance, abandoning the vehicle afterward. She was later picked up by another motorist and taken into custody.
Rivoire now faces several felony charges, including first-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and vehicle tampering. She is being held without bond while the criminal case proceeds.
According to Palmer’s fiancée, Riyen Jones, he was known in his community for offering rides to people in need — a trait that, she said, tragically may have contributed to his death. A friend was also in Palmer’s vehicle at the time of the encounter but reportedly left the car after becoming uneasy about the hitchhiker’s behavior.
Palmer’s family has described him as a generous provider and “a giver,” and a GoFundMe was established to support his funeral and the needs of his children.
