Peter “Peetah” Morgan, the frontman of the Grammy Award-winning Reggae ensemble Morgan Heritage, has passed away at 46 years old. The band, renowned for tracks like “Don’t Haffi Dread (To Be Rasta),” “Down by the River,” “Tell Me How Come,” and “She’s Still Loving Me,” revealed Peetah’s demise on Sunday (February 25), though they did not specify the cause of his death.
In a statement shared on Instagram, the Morgan family expressed their heartfelt sentiments, declaring, “With deep affection, we convey that our cherished husband, father, son, and brother, as well as the lead vocalist of Morgan Heritage, Peter Anthony Morgan, has transitioned today.” They also invoked a plea for divine intervention, writing, “Jah come and save from ourselves because love is only way.”
Morgan Heritage’s most recent endeavor was The Homeland, which debuted in April 2023. This project was characterized as a fusion of African and Jamaican sounds, classified under the genre of “World Music.”
Their inaugural album, Miracles, hit the shelves in 1994, shortly after their inaugural performance on the main stage at the Reggae Sunsplash music festival.
In 2015, their album Strictly Roots enjoyed a remarkable 44-week stint on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, reaching the top spot. This achievement culminated in the album winning the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2016, triumphing over notable contenders such as Jah Cure’s The Cure, Luciano’s Zion Awake, and Barrington Levy’s Acousticalevy.
Their excellence was further recognized in 2017 when they received a nomination for Best Reggae Album for their release, Avrakedabra.
Peetah Morgan’s solo endeavors produced notable tracks such as Better World (2023), My Makeda (2012), Heart Like Lion with Jah Sun (2012), Unfair with Busy Signal (2010), and Bye Bye (2009).
